Tumbling at Perfect Storm

Tumbling is the gymnastics element in all star cheerleading where athletes learn to move using their hands and feet in a series of springs, twists, rotations, and landings. Skills in this area include but are not limited to: rolls, cartwheels, walkovers, handsprings, tucks and layouts. Athletes can choose from a variety of classes offered at various times throughout the week.

Tumbling is an early-specialization element in gymnastics and cheerleading and as such requires additional training by qualified coaches. At Perfect Storm, we are committed to the highest standards of tumbling instruction and have developed our classes in accordance with the industry’s best practices. Many of our coaches are credentialed not only through the International Cheer Union, but also through the National Coaching Certification Program in association with Gymnastics Canada.  We also provide in-house training for our coaches on an on-going basis.

How our tumbling program works:

  • Each level has been divided into three components: basic, intermediate, and advanced.
  • Each of the components have a set of required skills that must be mastered before the athlete can move on.
  • Athletes will be assessed as part of an ongoing process. They must meet the requirements of each component before they can move on to the next component or level.
  • Successful completion of the components (all boxes checked) will result in the athlete receiving a certificate for the basic and intermediate components, and a button for the advanced component.

Checklists are available in each gym as well in the links below. We have created a youtube channel dedicated to tumbling skills: https://www.youtube.com/@PerfectStormTumbling. The channel features a video of each skill so that athletes and parents can see exactly what the skill should look like to help them understand what is needed in order to earn a checkmark for each box.  While we will not expect total perfection, simply “pulling” the skill will not earn a checkmark; skills must be completed consistently and with technical accuracy.

Coaches are in the process of assessing athletes’ tumbling skills.  As assessments are completed, athletes’ skill sheets will be added to their JackRabbit account.  To access your athlete’s sheet, please log into your Perfect Storm account or access your account through the Perfect Storm Athletics app.  Once you are in your account, click on the athlete whose assessment you would like to access.  The assessments are under the “resources” tab or button (on the app).

Tumbling Program Checklist
In an effort to provide athletes and parents with a streamlined and consistent approach to tumbling, we have made some adjustments to our level 1-4 tumbling program. Our goal with this adjusted tumbling program is to build stronger and more versatile athletes who are able to perform all tumbling skills at a level prior to moving up. The result of this approach is creating stronger athletes, teams, and routines at all levels going forward.

How it works:

  • Each level has been divided into three components: basic, intermediate, and advanced.
  • The components have a set of required skills that must be mastered before the athlete can move on.
  • Testing of skills will be implemented once finalized and further details will be shared with registered families at that time.
  • While there may be some exceptions to checking off every box, these will be few and far between and athletes should not expect to be the exception. We realize that there are many higher level athletes who may not have all of the skills at all of the previous levels. We will not be forcing all athletes to go back and learn previous level skills but in some cases we will be requiring athletes to learn lower level skills before progressing.

Tumbling Classes
Tumbling training is mandatory for all-star athletes on tumbling teams at all levels. Athletes can choose from a variety of classes offered at various times throughout the week. If you are required to take tumbling, or if you simply want to improve your tumbling, you may continue to take a regular tumbling class or you may sign up for a block of private or semi private lessons. We strive for a 8:1 athlete to coach ratio for all tumbling classes.

  • The cost for a tumbling class is $64.00 per month + GST.
  • Classes run once per week for 55 minutes.
  • The tumbling class schedule compliments each team’s practice time. For most teams there is an appropriate class right before or after the team’s cheer practice.
  • Classes run in two sessions: September-December and January-April (some fees may be pro-rated due to missed classes for holidays and/or competitions). – There will be further details shared regarding class changes/adjustments between the two sessions.
  • Cheer athletes in the all-star and prep programs pay monthly. Those not in one one of these cheer programs will pay the full fall or winter session fee (Sept-Dec or Jan-Mar/Apr) at registration. – Non-Storm athletes who register for a fall session will have the option to continue into the winter session.
  • We do not offer make up lessons if an athlete misses a class.

Please note: While tumbling is billed monthly for athletes in a cheer program, when you register you are committing to the entire session and the full session’s fees.

Semi-Private Tumbling Lessons
In addition to tumbling classes, we offer semi-private tumbling lessons. These lessons are for up to two athletes with one coach for 28 minute blocks. Private lessons allow coaches to give more personalized feedback and instruction. Generally, we see athletes progress faster in semi-private lessons vs tumbling classes. We ensure that if two athletes are scheduled together that they are both working on similar skills. Level 1 athletes should not book more than a single 28 min lesson unless a 58 minute lesson is approved by their coach.

What to know about Semi-Private Lessons:

  • Semi-Private lesson fees are $31.00 + GST per 28 minute block per athlete.
  • There is a 48 hour cancellation policy in effect for these lessons. If you cancel within 48 hours of the lesson and you are not able to find another athlete to take your spot, you will be charged for the lesson.
  • To book a lesson, please email [email protected].

Please note, we strive to check emails at least every couple of hours but it may take up to 48 hours to receive a reply during competition season/weekends.
